Louisiana’s Old State Capitol is a political and governmental history center.

Originally constructed in the 1850s, the Gothic castle on a hill sits on the western bank of the Mississippi River. HW Exhibits worked with staff to plan, develop, design, and fabricate their new permanent exhibit, Castle on the Hill: Evolution of the Old State Capitol. The exhibit focuses on the history of the capitol building, from early construction troubles, its burning during the Civil War, to its eventual restoration.

HW Exhibits incorporated objects that were discovered during the renovation such as gas lighting pieces and stained-glass fragments. One of our favorite exhibit elements is an interior door that visitors can open to see the layered construction

of the building. The design was inspired by the Gothic architecture of the landmark building.
