Jekyll Island, GA was once the playground of America’s wealthiest families during the Gilded Age of the early 20th century. They maintained an exclusive club and built lavish vacation cottages at Jekyll. Hollybourne Cottage is one of the island’s crown jewels and is the last remaining cottage to be restored and reopened. Built by a successful bridge builder, the construction of the house incorporated unique engineering and architecture to achieve his family’s dream home.

The HWE team worked in collaboration with curators to create a vision for the exhibits that highlight the home’s architecture and building techniques, displays family artifacts and history, provides virtual interactive experiences, and showcases the ongoing efforts to preserve and maintain the home. Exhibits include a variety of room experiences including staged rooms and rooms designed exclusively as exhibit galleries with interpretive panels, hands-on activities, and displays of family objects. Some rooms were left untouched and unrestored so guests could see the home’s architecture and preservation efforts. As a phased project, the development and installation of exhibits is ongoing.
